July Goal: Layered Cake | Baked

I know what you're thinking, TWO BLOG POSTS IN ONE DAY??? I can't believe it either. I don't know what I ate this morning but I was on a baking high! For those of you who follow me on twitter, you know that I've been baking and tweeting all day. 

First I made this amazing focaccia bread which I posted about below. And then came the cake. Today my friend celebrated her birthday by spending 6 hours in the car, driving home from the beach. I personally feel that that is no way to spend your birthday and so I surprised her with a chocolate cake.

Now I've never made a real layered cake before which is why it was one of my goals for this month. I used a recipe from Ina Garten and let me tell you, the bits that I had were fabulous.

Now I only have one cake pan in the size that I wanted to bake the cake, so I mixed the ingredients and put the first layer in the oven. I am a very impatient person and I unfortunately cracked the oven and this is what happened...

The cake fell. It wasn't horrible so I was like, it's fine. I'll just put that one in the middle. So after the cake, cooled, I put in the next layer. Unfortunately, my sister didn't know I was baking a cake and opened the oven and this is what happened.

Yeah let's not even talk about it...Thankfully, everything worked out and I managed to frost the cake.
